Celebrating the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution INTENT A clash of beliefs. Personal betrayals. Historic consequences. Hear a new play read by an exciting cast of New York actors — then stay for a fun “tavern chat” with local historians about the real people and events that inspired it! By Mona Z. Smith/Directed by Traci Mariano Featured actors include Patrick Halley,** Carl Howell,** Sean McNall,** Ryan Quinn,** Kurt Rhoads** and Nance Williamson** INTENT is a new play inspired by local, historical events surrounding the capture and trial of Major John André. André is the fascinating British spy who conspired with the disgruntled American general Benedict Arnold to surrender West Point to the British during the American Revolution. Major André, 30, was famously captured by New York militiamen under an ancient tree in Sleepy Hollow and then faced a military tribunal on charges of espionage in Tappan. Other noted Revolutionary War figures who appear in the play including George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, General Nathanael Greene, and the Marquis de Lafayette. This play also imagines what happens between Major André and a mysterious woman known only as “the Innkeeper’s Wife,” and the impact she has on the young British spy as he awaits his fate. Explore an important and intriguing chapter of American history that played out along the Hudson River, in the shadow of West Point, and just a few miles from the Paramount Theater.
