Paul Moro: The Peekskill Paintings 1926—1937
September 17 -- October 29, 2016
Opening Reception: Saturday, September 17 11am -- 2pm
The Field Library in Peekskill is proud to present Paul Moro: The Peekskill Paintings 1926-1937, a retrospective of the Italian-born American artist Paul Moro. Moro and family resided in Peekskill from 1924 until his death in 1953, and this exhibit serves to bring his dynamic paintings full circle and present them to a new generation and appreciative audience.
Moro’s exquisite oils demonstrate his deep connection to the vital Hudson River city he called home, expertly capturing Peekskill's dichotomies: heavy industrialization (Water Street, Peekskill, 1933, The Hat Factory, 1933, and Coal Yard, Peekskill, 1934) and richly hued suburban homes and landscapes (Lincoln Terrace, Peekskill, 1934, Griffith’s Pond, Peekskill, 1935, and Mansard Victorian from Mackellar’s Brook, Peekskill, NY, 1934.) In all, the 22 canvases on display serve to illustrate Moro’s precise artistry, skillfully utilizing both starkly realistic and boldly graphic techniques to distinctly capture Peekskill life.
Paul Moro was born in Bettola, Italy in 1886. In 1900, he entered the Scuola degli Belle Arti in Rome, and emigrated to the United States in 1909. In 1932, Moro became an American citizen and opened his own painting restoration studio at 1 West 53rd Street, New York, NY, which was successful until his death in 1953.
In 1925 and 1934, Moro’s work was accepted for the annual exhibition at the National Academy of Design. After his death of a stroke in 1953, he was recognized with three New York solo exhibitions at the Florence Lewison Gallery in 1964, 1965, and 1967. His first major retrospective was at the Newington-Cropsey Foundation in Hastings-on Hudson, NY, in June/July of 2016.
Paul Moro: The Peekskill Paintings 1926-1937 features a number of works which will be seen by the public for the first time.
A limited number of fully illustrated catalogs featuring an essay by art historian Dr. Valerie Ann Leeds will be available from the Newington-Cropsey Foundation exhibition Paul Moro: A Painters Journey for purchase at the opening. All proceeds to benefit the Field Library.
