DESCRIPTION:Alva Nelson\, a multi-faceted musician\, has performed & recorded with Lightnin' Hopkins\, Kirk Whalum\, and Regina Belle. He has been musical director for "Ain't Misbehavin'"\, "Violet"\, and "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill" and produced Dorothy Leigh's "A Second Chance"\, for which he wrote three songs. "Soul Eyes" is Alva Nelson's latest jazz piano release. Nelson has received three "Meet the Composer" Grants\; won 1st Place in the Composers' Guild Composition Contest with "Synonymous Dichotomy" ('83)\, "Buster's Bounce" ('85) and "Tranquil Jubilation ('88)\; and was selected as a semifinalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. Throughout the 1990's\, Nelson performed\, arranged\, and orchestrated music for the Boys Choir of Harlem\, including engagements at Carnegie Hall & Alice Tully Hall with Wynton Marsalis and Kathleen Battle\; Hubert Laws and the St. Luke's Orchestra\, and the New York Philharmonic with Zubin Mehta.
